A British student was jailed for 8 months on Friday after stealing sensitive information from the internal network of social networking site Facebook.
The breach took place last April and it is still unclear as to what information was obtained, although no user information had been targeted.
It has not been made clear how Glenn Mangham succeeded to gain access into the social media giants network, however he claimed that he was merely trying to demonstrate the gaps their Security Vendor. Mangham stated “It was to identify vulnerabilities in the system so I could compile a report that I could then bundle over to Facebook and show them what was wrong with their system.”
Although Mangham’s intentions were clearly not for financial gain, he has still been charged with 8 months for merely accessing this the heart of the network and the “intellectual property” he obtained within.
