Councils across the UK condemned over data loss

The Information commissioner has issued a warning to 5 UK councils, due to events of personal data leakages, which breach the Data Protection Act.

Due to these recurring incidents, councils across the country have been reminded of the fact that they face large fines if found guilty of violating the Data Protection Act.

Councils named and shamed included Brighton and Hove, which emailed a staff’s personal information to over 2,000 council workers and also Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council, which breached the Act on 4 occasions in 2 months.

The councils have committed to introduce measures to ensure data is handled in compliance with the Act from this point forward.
